***13 days to go until #GCD2013***: UNIQUE HOME FOR GIRLS IN FOCUS

***13 days to go until #GCD2013***

Maharaj Kirpa we are supporting three charities for the #GCD2013 Gurpurab Clothes Drive; Rainbows Hospice (reg. charity 1014051), Unique Home for Girls (reg. charity 1127531) and Action Homeless (reg. charity 702230) this Gurpurab. These three local charities are carrying out vital work to help children suffering from terminal illness (Rainbows), abandoned girls (Unique Home for Girls) and women and children who have been left homeless as a result of domestic violence (Action Homeless).

This week we’re providing the Sangat with more information about the great work Unique Home for Girls does…..

Unique Home for Girls 1127531

Unique Home for Girls is a home for unwanted, abandoned girls in Julandhar, India. Established by Bibi Parkash Kaur in 1993, the home has one simple aim: to give these abandoned girls back their lives through education and most importantly love.

So who are we?
We are a group of like-minded and motivated UK residents who during the past few years have regularly visited and continue to be enthralled at the humanitarian work being carried on at the Home. So much so that we started a charity here to help them –UK Friends of Unique Home.

Due to many cultural and economic reasons (dowry, daughters thought of as consumers and sons as producers, potential conflict over property division, continuation of family line, to name but a few ) boys are regarded as the preferred sex and consequently female foeticide and infanticide is often the chosen path for women who feel they have no alternative. You would think education and awareness would put an end to these practices but unfortunately not. The statistics speak for themselves and in fact the rate of female foeticide is higher in urban, affluent areas then rural, poverty stricken regions. 274 girls die every day in Punjab before they are born. Yet the main spirit behind this institution is Bibi Prakash Kaur Jee. She is burning midnight oil for the uplift of these children. In fact she has set the rehabilitation of unwanted girls as human beings as a goal of her life. But the struggle to restore the lost human rights of an individual is a life long struggle.

To raise these children as enlightened and self-respecting citizens and restore them their due place in society is a very hard task that required a mass, social effort. We appeal to all kind hearted people to come forward with all possible means.
